Gender Inequalities Remain Deeply Rooted in EFFAT Sectors

Despite progress, gender inequalities remain deeply rooted in agriculture, food & drink, tourism, and domestic work.

Women – especially migrants – continue to face lower wages, limited career opportunities, precarious contracts, and gender-based violence and harassment.

In some European countries, the gender pay gap in agriculture exceeds 30%. In the food and drinks sector, although women make up nearly half of the workforce, they are concentrated in lower-paid positions, with fewer opportunities for career progression. In tourism, 70% of part-time workers are women, often juggling professional responsibilities with unpaid care work. In domestic work, women remain among the most vulnerable, frequently working undeclared or without social protections.

To address these issues, this project, funded by the European Commission, provides a comprehensive report offering an in-depth analysis of gender inequalities across EFFAT sectors.

In addition, the project offers practical tools to support trade unions at all levels in their efforts to close the gender pay gap, combat gender-based violence, and ensure better representation of women. These resources will help strengthen collective bargaining, improve working conditions, and promote fair and equal treatment for all workers.
